Kinky Sink Exhibition
The Dystopian futures of metropolitan life depicted in most 90’s Japanese animation has been my source of inspiration for making my digital manipulated work. The overcrowded cities such as Tokyo, Japan and my hometown Chengdu, China are built up by mass production of concrete buildings and commercials sky-rises to accommodate the ever growing population. From a distance life in the city seems chaotic, with the interaction between so many people and the space. However, looking closely, it is organized and contains repetitions. The architectural spaces are angular and have repeating modular. The advertisements are everywhere but also repetitive. Through layering photographs and from different perspectives, I recreate the chaotic energy manifest by metropolitan cities as well as investigate the eeriness and displacement of possible dystopian futures that might occur if overpopulation, mass-production, and intrusive commercial continue to expand.
The color pallet that I use is in purple based. In cinematography, purple often represents danger and mystery. In 90’s animations, purpled blue and pink are often used to depict hologram advertisements. The coloring in my photography is intended to create a heighten sensitivity and also a sense of displacement and abnormality. Hence, by manipulating layers, color, and perspective of the photography, I bring you into one of the parallel worlds of our future.
